Candidate "B"
David Lane wore out his welcome in Clearlake, say sources
David Lane, one of two finalists in the Desert Hot Springs City Manager search, finally wore out his welcome in Clearlake, California where he served as that city's top city administrator, according to sources of Desert Hot Springs News and Reviews.

"They ran him out for some kind of undisclosed reason," said our source who spoke on condition that his name not be revealed. "David's primary talent was to get the council to approve big increases in his contract year after year, and to add golden parachutes at every chance, making firing him an expensive option.

According to another source that has lived in Clearlake for the past 20 years, council members disliked Lane because he was arrogant and treated citizens with contempt if they didn't agree with him. At a Labor Day meeting called by the city council, Lane himself identified a common perception by others about him is that he is seen as arrogant, a trait he shared as one of his weaknesses.

Clearlake, California has been going through a housing boom like many other California Cities and Desert Hot Springs. This too, according to our sources, led to problems in Lane's time in Clearlake. Lane has been accused of favoring developers doing business in the city.

"Lane always bent over backwards for the chamber of commerce and developers ... while bloating the city staff with cronies and yes-men, who got all kinds of perks unknown anywhere else."

This article was written using contacts in Clearlake, CA where in our earlier days we had contacts, including family ties to the region, some of whom had dealings with Mr. Lane in the course of doing business with the city. Our sources did not wish to be identified in this article. We have chosen to respect their privacy. Several attempts were made to contact Lane for his comment. - ed.
